This past Saturday my husband and I had a super date night.  The anticipation of this date was filled with worry, apprehension and excitement but I’m happy to report that the results were wonderful. My husband usually plans most of our nights out because if it were left to me we would probably never go anywhere.  I don’t like risk or change or new things.  I’m very happy going to the same restaurant and ordering the same food because past results have taught me that it[…]

My mother-in-law gave me this recipe last Christmas so that I could reproduce these soup kits with the kids to give to teachers and neighbors.  It’s a little time consuming collecting jars and ingredients, but once you’ve got it all it’s easy to put several together all at once.  They look really nice in a glass or plastic jar, all the ingredients layered and a recipe card with instructions tried with a ribbon around the lid.  We like this yummy recipe[…]

Today is the first day that it really feels like and looks like winter here.  We woke up to a few centimeters of snow, blowing winds and a -15C windchill.  After bundling the kids up and off to school, I started to think about lunch and dinner ideas.  My youngest son is home for lunch but doesn’t like to eat lunch.  He would rather snack all day so usually I don’t put much effort into lunch.  I suspect that after school the[…]

I’m really frustrated lately with what my kids won’t eat.  What used to be go to meals are no longer being eaten.  Most meals are met with turned up noses, sour faces and pleads from Mom and Dad to please eat some of it because you liked it the last time we ate it.  All of it results in a lot of food being thrown out, frazzled parents and two kids who just want to eat “snacks”.  To get inspired, I[…]

I never used to like sweet potatoes.  When I was a kid, we would only eat them at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  My mom would prepare them in an orange juice marinade and then topped with brown sugar and marshmallows.  The whole concept sounded disgusting to me as a kid and still is not appealing to me at all.  It wasn’t until I met my husband’s family who eat sweet potatoes just like they eat regular white potatoes.  They steam them in[…]

It’s a freezing cold Sunday and we just got back from taking the kids skating. Now we’re cuddled up on the couch, drinking hot chocolate and watching a movie and it’s nearing dinner time.  I don’t feel like doing much right now so thank goodness I had the brilliant thought of putting a roast in the crock pot this morning.  Now I only have a little work making potatoes and veggies and a yummy dinner will be on the table[…]

Lunch at my husband’s grandparents was very nice. There were chips and drinks out before lunch was served and I didn’t have anything. Once lunch was served I had a reasonable amount of all the Thanksgiving fixings that I enjoy and was quiet happy with myself. Dessert is usually a variety of pies that are good but nothing I can’t control myself around. This day was different. An aunt walked by me as I sat in the living room and[…]

Today was another successful food day but I was so hungry after the kids were in bed I practically had another meal. I could have eaten nachos or cookies but instead made a healthier choice. I really had to use my self-control but once I sat down to eat, I was happy. Here’s what I ate today: Breakfast: 1 slice of whole wheat toast with light peanut butter Lunch: Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with cheese and light mayo[…]
